Screen Printing
More commonly known as silk
screening, this method involves transferring an image, design or logo to
a the apparel using a stencil and a mesh screen. The ink is forced through
a framed screen on to the apparel. Multiple colors require multiple screens
and stencils
Digital Printing
The direct to garment method
uses water-based inks along with heat to imprint the design on the apparel.
Just on application is needed no matter the number or complexity of the
image or design.
Heat Transfer Printing
The other alternative for
image printing on apparel is heat transfer printing. Basically
an image or design is first printed on to a special transfer paper.
This paper is then placed on the garment and pressed onto the it with pressure
and heat. Typicality this method is inexpensive and sometimes can be done
at home. It is only practical for individual and temporary usage.
Pros and Cons of T-Shirt or
Garment Image Printing
When it comes to printing an
image, design or logo on apparel there are three different methods. The
most popular and utilized is the screen printing method. The other two
ways of apparel printing are heat transfer and digital printing, also known
as direct to garment, or DTG printing. In order to make an informed decision
about your apparel printing project is to compare the advantages and disadvantages
associated with each.
Pros of T-Shirt Screen
Printing
-
Better print quality. Generally
speaking, experts say the ability of the ink to bond to the material of
the shirt in the screen printing process results in a more durable and
clear image than with DTG.
-
The custom printed t-shirts
lasts through at least twice as many washings as a heat transfer shirt.
-
Versatility. Screen printing
generally works just as well on other apparel, such as hats, bags and jackets,
as with T-shirts.
-
The process allows you to print
on dark and colored custom t-shirts.
-
Cheaper with big orders. There
is generally a setup fees charged for screen printing to prepare the screens
needed for the different colors in the shirt. However, the larger the order
the less expensive the cost of screen printing. So far very large orders,
you can usually save money relying on screen printing.
Cons of T-Shirt Screen Printing
-
More expensive with smaller
orders. If you only want a dozen or fewer shirts, the additional cost to
prepare the screens and ink for screen printing is usually more expensive
than digital printing. It's common for T-Shirt screen printing companies
to charge a fee to prepare the screens and ink for the order.
Not as good with photo reproductions.
Most experts say that DTG is the better process for reproducing photos
because the digital reproduction is usually more like the original photo
than the labor-intensive process involved with screen printing.
Pros for Iron-On Printed
T-Shirts and Garments
-
The process is relatively simple,
thus the least expensive
-
Heat transferring is ideal if
you need a large number of colors printed relative to the number of t-shirts
-
You only have to print one t-shirt.
-
Great for team uniforms due
to the durability of the transfer
Cons for Iron-On Printed
T-Shirts and Garments
-
They last only through 25 washing.
-
The ink may bleed while washing.
-
They do not look as professional
as screen printed t-shirts.
-
You only can print on lightly
colored t-shirts.
-
The print is stiff and not as
precise and colors are not as brilliant
Pros of Digital to Garment
T-shirt and Garment Printing
-
With digital printing, you can
print single designs economically.
-
Very like setup cost
-
Great for reproducing photographic
prints, multi colored designs and logos.
-
DTG does not have a "heavy feel"
like screen printing
-
Easily customize different shirts,
i.e. names or numbers on team uniforms
Cons of Digital to Garment
T-shirt and Garment Printing
-
Unfortunately, expensive per
shirt cost and slow printing means that the t shirt is usually higher in
price to purchase.
-
The wash cycles of a digital
print t-shirt are vastly inferior to screen-printing many begin to fade
after just a couple of washes.
-
Marginal results when printing
on dark color apparel
